October 26, 2008 – Random Thoughts from Cambodia

1.       All toilet paper in Cambodia is pink.

2.       Children walk through the muddy slums barefoot – the puddles are full of urine and waste…heartbreaking.

3.       A five month old baby captured my heart here in the slums. She weighs as much as a two month old should.

4.       NO I do not need a tuk-tuk ride when I am already sitting in a tuk-tuk.

5.       I never expected to fall in love with Cambodia – but I am.

6.       I have introduced the most delicious Australian cookie to my teammates.

7.       Cambodian men usually have a long pinky and thumbnail…I have wanted to carry around finger nail clippers and attack every man with them. No man should have longer nails than me!

8.       The main concern of the people in the slums is that they make enough money today to feed their family…reality check!

9.       I either have a fungus, flea or bed bug bites… did I mention my back itches?

10.    I am missing the colors of fall. The constant year of summer offers no change of season yet.

11.    Pastor Sarith is one of the biggest servants I have ever met. Not only is he a pastor in the church here at the slums but he also runs an orphanage. Talk about no free time.

12.    I am not ready to leave here.

13.    The phrase “It’s as hot as Hades” should be changed to “It’s as hot as Cambodia.”

14.    I want to be less self involved and serve others more.

15.    At first glance the faces of Cambodians seem uninviting and stern but with one smile from us their face lights up like they just won the lottery. Beautiful!

Thank you for doing what you’re doing. I would like to do something like what you’re doing after graduating from college. As a first generation Cambodian American, I truly appreciate you and the other volunteers involved in helping people in the country where my parents came from.
